Huskies Fall to Border Cats on Wednesday •PDF• •Print• •E-mail•

Joey Webb PitchTHUNDER BAY, ONTARIO -- The Duluth Huskies continued their last road trip of the 2012 Northwoods League Regular Season by heading to Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada on Wednesday for a three game series against the rival Thunder Bay Border Cats.  The Huskies jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the 3rd Inning, but that would prove to be the extent of the Duluth offense as the Border Cats scored the next 13 runs to put another bump in the Huskies battle for the North Division Title.  The Huskies fell by the score of 13-3.

Offensively, James Ramsay (South Florida) and Wade Wass (Meridian CC) each had two hits for the Huskies with Conor Szczerba (Polk State) and Brian Hansen (St. Cloud State) racking up the Huskies two RBIs.  On the mound, Joey Webb (Menlo College) got the start for Duluth and worked 3 Innings allowing 9 runs, 8 of them earned.  Evan Geist (Florida State) and Jack English (Florida Gulf Coast) worked in relief for Duluth.

The Huskies and Border Cats will face off again Thursday and Friday Night with the Lake Superior Cup on the line!  Both remaining games start at 6:05 pm Central.  You can catch all of the Huskies games at www.NorthwoodsLeague.tv.  The Huskies return home to Wade Stadium on Saturday and Sunday for the final two regular season home games of 2012.  Saturday starts at 7:05 and Sunday's first pitch is at 5:05 pm.

The Stingers never trailed after their 3-run first inning rally and in the third inning, Duluth tied the game at 3-3, but just could not slip past the Willmar offense. James Ramsay (South Florida), who leads the Huskies offense, went 1-for-3 Friday night and 0-for-4 Saturday, lowering his batting average to .377, which is still second in the league standings. Austin Dubberly (Montevallo) went 3-for-3 Friday and also scored one run and batted in one run, but could not help to ignite the Huskies' offense to help them past the Stingers. Willmar would end up winning the rain-shortened, 6 inning game by the score of 4-7.  Duluth struck first in the game Saturday night with two runs on just one hit to take an early lead in the first inning. Pitcher Josh Mooney (Menlo College) would then give up a hit and two walks before a four-run grand slam blast also early in the game. After 3 innings, errors proved to be costly for the Huskies' defense and Willmar already lead the game 9-2.Trey Vavra (Madison College) went 3-for-5, scoring one run as well for the Huskies. Wade Wass (Meridian College) and Brian Hansen (St. Cloud State) were the only Huskies who had RBI's during the night.
