The Duluth Huskies faced off against the Moon Dogs of Mankato yesterday for a double header due to Tuesday's rainout. The Moon Dogs topped the Huskies 4-1 in the first game, and came back from behind in the second game to win 4-3.
The first game saw all 5 runs scored in the 3rd inning. The Moon Dogs loaded the bases with no outs, then scored two runs on wild pitches, and two on a double by LF Danny Miller. In the bottom of the frame, Casey Lytle (Kansas) scored the lone run for the Huskies on the third run-scoring wild pitch of the inning. Moon Dogs starter, Logan Odom took over from there, pitching a complete game 5 hitter, allowing just 1 run. Frank De Jiulio (Daytona State College) took the loss for the Huskies, falling to 0-3 on the year. The second game of the day saw solid pitching early, as it took 5 innings for either team to get on the board. After not scoring since the 3rd inning of game one, the bats finally came alive in the 5th. With men on second and third, Cody Asche (Nebraska) ripped a base hit that scored Tyler Erickson (UMD) from third. Zeke Devoss (Miami) was unable to score from second on the base hit, but when Asche stole second, DeVoss broke for home and scored on the double steal making it 2-0 Huskies. The 6th inning was a tough one for starting pitcher Chris Jensen (San Diego). After recording two outs, Jensen struck out Robby Ort, however he reached on a past ball to load the bases. The Moon Dogs then got back to back RBI singles to give them a 3-2 lead. Down 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh, the Huskies had speed on the basepaths with Erickson on third and DeVoss on second. Moon Dogs closer Zach Calhoon then threw a wild pitch, allowing Erickson to score from third and cut the lead to one with Asche at the plate. However, Calhoon got Asche to fly out to deep center to end the game. Jensen pitched well for the Huskies, going 6 innings allowing 3 runs (1 earned), and tying a season high with 8 strikeouts. Alex Blackford was dominant for the Moon Dogs, going 6 innings striking out 11 Huskies. He picked up the win, giving him a record of 2-2 on the year. The Huskies travel to Wilmar tonight for the start of a 5 game roadtrip. |

It was a rough evening for the Huskies Saturday night. They didn't have a whole lot working for them, while the visiting Thunder Bay Border Cats were basically flawless. The Border Cats jumped out to an insurmountable 12-2 lead by the 3rd inning. Starting pitcher Connor Hulse (Harvard) lasted just one inning, and the bullpen didn't provide much relief. Meanwhile, Ryan Court, Ben Scheffler, and Tanner Nivins, the 5-6-7 hitters for the Border Cats, went 7-12 with 9 RBI between the three of them. Working with an early lead, starting pitcher Corey Pappel didn't allow the Huskies to climb back into the game. He went 5 innings, allowing just 2 first inning runs. Robbie Collier (North Florida) was the only Husky with multiple hits, as the offense couldn't match the Border Cats.
The Huskies look to rebound Sunday as they face the Border Cats for the second game of the series. The game is scheduled for 5:05. |
