The Duluth Huskies kicked off an 8 game homestand Thursday night with a 4-2 victory over the Willmar Stingers. This was the first game in 4 days for both teams because of the All-Star break in Eau Claire. The Huskies got a great pitching performance from starter Chris Jensen (San Diego) who has quality starts in 5 of his last 6 starts. Jensen went 6 innings allowing no runs on just 4 hits. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the 4th inning when the Huskies exploded for 4 runs. Mark Threlkeld (Louisiana Tech), coming off his HR derby victory, led off the inning with a single, and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Roliard (Louisiana Tech). Barrett Serrato (Purdue) and Zeke DeVoss (Miami) extended the Huskies lead to 4-0 with back to back RBI singles. That was all Huskies pitching would need, as Jensen, Austin Gaines (Florida Gulf Coast), and Jason Whalen (Hillsborough Community College) held the Stingers offense to just two runs. Whalen picked up his 7th save of the year with a perfect ninth.
The Stingers got their two runs in the 8th, when RF Jordan Smith hit a 2 RBI triple. Devoss and Threlkeld had two hits apiece for the Huskies, who face the Stingers again on Friday for the second game of a two game series. The game is scheduled for 7:05. |

The Duluth Huskies designated hitter Cody Asche was named the Star of Stars at the 2010 Northwoods League All Star Game. The Star of Stars is awarded each year to the Most Valuable Player in the game. Asche was 2-4 in the game with a 2 run homer and 2 runs scored as the North defeated the South by a score of 7-5 at Carson Park in Eau Claire, WI.
It was a productive night for members of the Huskies as OF Casey Lytle (Kansas) entered the game in the fifth inning and played left field. Pitchers Robbie Collier (University of North Florida) and Ben Hughes (St Olaf) both pitched 0.2 innings and allowed no hits and with Mark Threlkeld (Louisiana Tech) winning the Home Run Derby competition earlier in the evening, the Duluth Huskies swept the individual awards. Asche joins Brock Bond (2006) as the only other Duluth Huskie to be named Star of Stars at the NWL All Star Game. Threlkeld becomes the first Huskie to win the Home Run Derby. The Huskies return to town Thursday to face the Willmar Stingers at 7:05 pm as they kick off a 7 game home stand.

The Brainerd Lakes Area Lunkers were in town for the second game of a two game series on Sunday evening. After shutting out the Lunkers 9-0 Saturday night, the Huskies were looking for their first sweep since July 8th. Mark Threlkeld (Louisianna Tech University) got them off to a good start in the first, blasting his 7th HR of the year to put the Huskies up 2-0. Tied at 3 in the bottom of the fourth, the Huskies got two walks and doubles from Threlkeld, Casey Lyttle (Kansas), and Austin Gaines (Florida Gulf Coast) to extend their lead to 7-3. The lead would not last long, however, as the Lunkers put together a 6 run 5th to put them back up by two runs. CF Vince Bruno had a bases clearing triple, and Chadd Krist added a single that scored two more Lunkers to give them a 9-7 lead. The Huskies cut the lead to 9-8 in the 8th when Zeke Devoss (Miami) tagged up and scored on a sacrifice fly. That was as close as they would come, as the Lunkers added another run in the top of the 9th, and held on for the 10-8 victory.
After getting great pitching performances the last two games, Frank De Jiulio (Daytona State College) and Connor Hulse (Harvard) struggled, allowing 9 runs in 4.2 innings between the two. Lunkers starter Patrick Nathanson also had a rough outing, but the Lunkers' bullpen was able to hold the Huskies to 1 run over the final 5 innings. Mark Threlkeld had a big night for the Huskies, going 4-4 with a HR and 3 RBI. The Huskies will be off until Thursday due to the All-Star Break. |

The Huskies won their second game in a row on Saturday night, defeating the Brainerd Lakes Area Lunkers 9-0. The Huskies played a great all-around game, getting great pitching, defense, and as has been the norm lately, offense. Starting pitcher Robbie Collier (University of North Florida) followed up Chris Jensen's (San Diego) no hit bid, with a great outing of his own, tossing 6 innings of shutout ball, while striking out 7. Ben Hughes (St. Olaf) completed the shutout for the Huskies, following up Collier with 3 scoreless innings for his second save of the year.
The Huskies haven't had a whole lot of trouble scoring runs lately, and tonight was no exception. However, for most of the season, the offense has come from the the top half of the order. Tonight, it was the bottom half that came up big. The 5-9 hitters each recorded hits, collecting 8 total between them. Pete Cappetta (Illinois), Scott Sommerfeld (Missouri) and Phillip Menou (Louisianna Tech University) each had two hits, and combined for 6 of the Huskies' 9 RBI. Cody Asche (Nebraska) continued his torrid July, racking up 3 more hits including two doubles. In addition to leading the league in HR's and RBI, Asche is creeping up the leaderboard the third category of the triple crown. His batting average climbed to .325 with his 3-3 performance tonight, good for 10th in the league. Collier improved to 4-1 on the year for the Huskies, while Lunkers' starter Drew Smith fell to 0-5 on the season. The two teams will meet tomorrow night at 5:05 for the second and final game of the series. |
