The Duluth Huskies opened the second half of the season against the Alexandria Beetles on Friday night with hopes to start the half on a good foot. However, a 4 run 6th inning and the arm of starting pitcher Lindsey Caughel (Stetson University) was enough to give the Beetles a 4-2 victory.
The Huskies took the early lead in the second inning, when Tyler Albright (Harvard) lined a single back up the middle to score Mark Threlkeld (Louisianna Tech University). Huskies starter Josh Renfro (State College of Florida) kept the Beetles' offense in check until the 6th when Brainerd got an RBI double from Markus Semien (Cal Berkeley) to tie the game at 1 a piece. After an intentional walk to load the bases, Beetles' catcher Tim Roberson (Florida Gulf Coast) stepped into the box and laced a 2-1 pitch for a bases-clearing double, stretching the Beetles' lead to 4-1. Threlkeld made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth, when he led off the inning with a bomb to left field for his 5th HR of the year. However, Beetles closer Kevin Vangheluwe (Michigan) was able to retire the next three Huskies in order to record his third save of the season. Threlkeld was the only spark in the lineup for the Huskies, going 2-4 with a double and a solo HR. The Beetles got big games from 2B Mikel Alvarez (Florida Gulf Coast), who reached base in all five of his plate appearances, and Roberson who went 2-4 with the bases-loaded double in the 6th. Picking up the win for the Beetles was Caughel, who went 7 innings allowing 1 run on just 5 hits. He improves to 5-1 on the year and lowered his ERA to 2.54. Renfro (2-2) took the loss for the Huskies going 6 innings allowing 4 runs on 7 hits. The two teams square off tomorrow night at 7:05 for game two of the three game series. |

The Duluth Huskies continued their winning ways on the road as they bested the Rochester Honkers 8-5 Wednesday night at Mayo Field in Rochester.
The Huskies jumped out to an early lead in the first inning off of Cody Asche's RBI double scored Zeke DeVoss (Miami) who led off the game with a double of his own. Rochester rallied in the second inning to take a 2-1 lead, but in the third, DeVoss was a menace on the basepaths again for Duluth as his two stolen bases allowed him to score on a passed ball to tie the game.
The Huskies were not done displaying their offensive prowess. Phillip Menou (Louisiana Tech) flexed his muscle with a two run home run in the top of the fourth inning, and Cody Asche hit his fourth home run of the season in the sixth inning with a two run blast. Menou finished the game with 4 RBI, and DeVoss scored three runs on the evening.
Steven Ewing (Miami) pitched six innings to get the win, and Austin Gaines (Florida Gulf Coast) threw a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save.
The same two teams battle at 7:05 tonight at Mayo field in Rochester. Duluth sends Connor Hulse (Harvard) to the mound against David Hurlbut (Cal-State Fullerton). Tune in to www.northwoodsleague.tv
