Huskies Fall In Pitchers Duel PDF Print E-mail

Cody AscheThe Duluth Huskies fell to the Brainerd Lakes Lunkers 2-1 on a beautiful 4th of July evening at Wade Stadium. Pitching was the theme of the night, as the two starters combined to go 13 innings, allowing only 2 runs. The Lunkers took the early lead in the 3rd inning thanks to an RBI double by RF Vince Bruno (who went 3-5). Third baseman Tommy Reyes followed up with an RBI single to extend the lead to 2-0. That was all Brainerd starter Nick Anderson (St. Cloud State) would need. He was dominant, allowing no runs on 3 hits while striking out 5. The Huskies were able to make it interesting in the 8th, when Cody Asche picked up his 22nd RBI of the year to cut the deficit to 1 run. However, they couldn't tie it up against Lunkers closer Ray Black (Pittsburgh) who pitched a perfect 9th for the save.

Huskies starter Chris Jensen (San Diego) was solid, but took the loss going 5 innings and allowing 2 runs.

Huskies Take Down Lunkers PDF Print E-mail

Mark ThrelkeldIt was a scorcher in Duluth on Saturday. Fortunately for the Huskies, the bat of Mark Threlkeld (Louisiana Tech) was just as hot as the temperature outside. The Huskies took down the Brainerd Lunkers 5-2 thanks in large part to Threlkeld's 3 hits including a two run HR in the 7th inning. The Huskies took the early lead in the bottom of the 3rd when Zeke Devoss (Miami) drew a walk and used his speed to steal second and score on an error. Threlkeld recorded his first RBI of the night when he laced a single to left scoring Cody Asche (Nebraska). In the top of the 4th the Lunkers loaded the bases with no outs off Huskies starter Josh Renfro (State College of Florida). After a strikeout, the Lunkers were able to tie the game with a single and a bases loaded walk. Renfro was able to limit the damage by striking out the next Lunker and inducing a flyout to center to end the inning. Threlkeld gave the Huskies the lead again in the 5th when he plated UMD's Tyler Erickson on a single, and he was not done. After Jeff Reynolds (Harvard) led off the 7th with a single, Threlkeld launched a missile over the 340 foot left field wall, giving him a team leading 4 HR's on the year and bringing his RBI total to 4 on the night. The Huskies' pen took over from there, retiring the next 6 Lunkers as Jason Whalen (Hillsborough CC) recorded his 5th save of the year.

Josh Renfro picked up the win for the Huskies, pitching seven solid innings to improve his record to 3-1. Lunkers' starter Kyle Teague (Oakland University) was the hard luck loser as he pitched six innings allowing only 1 earned run.
