Collier K's 13 In 6-1 Victory PDF Print E-mail

Rob CollierRobbie Collier (University  of North Florida) was virtually unhittable Monday night, striking out a season high 13 in a 6-1 victory over the Thunder Bay BorderCats. The victory kept the Huskies within two games of first place as both St. Cloud and Willmar won their games last night as well. The Huskies loaded the bases in the third, and opened the scoring when Tyler Erickson (UMD) was hit by a pitch. Cody Asche (Nebraska) then picked up his league leading 60th RBI of the year with a sac fly to make the lead 2-0. The Huskies tacked on three more runs in the fourth thanks to an RBI triple by Pete Cappetta (Illinois) and an RBI single by new Huskies catcher, Danny Herzog (Lynn), who had 2 hits on the night. Jo Jo Sharrar (Utah) led off the sixth with a double, and scored on an RBI single by Zeke DeVoss (Miami).

Thunder Bay's lone run of the night came in the 7th, thanks to an RBI single by CF Tanner Nivvins.

Collier picked up the win for the Huskies, giving him an impressive record of 7-1 on the year. He is also third in the Northwoods league in strikeouts, with 61. The bottom of the order was impressive for the Huskies, going 7-15 with 5 runs scored. Sharrar, Herzog, and Cappetta had 2 hits a piece to lead the offense.

The Huskies and BorderCats continue their 3 game series Tuesday at Wade Stadium. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05.

Huskies and Honkers Split Double-Header PDF Print E-mail

Jeff ReynoldsThe Rochester Honkers ventured up to Duluth on Friday night for the first of three consecutive double headers. The first game was a continuation from a game earlier in July that was rained out in the third inning. Connor Hulse (Harvard) started the first game, giving up 4 runs (2 earned). Trailing 4-1 to start Friday, the Huskies couldn't find their groove. Rochester scored 2 runs in three consecutive innings to give them an insurmountable 10-1 lead. If for nothing else, two runs in the 8th gave the Huskies some momentum for the second game of the double header. The Honkers got 3 hits from 1B Matt Dittman and DH Ryan Hambright to lead an offense that got hits from all 9 batters.

In the second game, the Huskies got off to a quick start, loading the bases and scoring runs on a walk, hit-by-pitch, and a passed ball. Up 3-1 in the 4th, the Huskies again loaded the bases with no outs. Orry Engebretsen (UMD) got the first RBI of his short Huskies career with an RBI groundout. Zeke DeVoss (Miami) then laced an RBI double, and Tyler Erickson (UMD) hit a sac fly to extend the Huskies lead to 6-1. That would prove to be enough for the Huskies pitching staff, as starter Ben Hughes (St. Olaf) went 4.2 innings allowing 3 runs (2 earned) and 8 strikeouts. Lefthander Jacob Bax (Jefferson CC) entered the game in relief and struck out all four of the batters he faced. Jason Whalen (Hillsborough CC) picked up his 10th save of the season, striking out two Honkers.

Jeff Reynolds (Harvard) led the way for the Huskies on offense, collecting two hits including a double. The two teams meet again Saturday for the second of three straight double headers. The first game is scheduled for 5:05.

Anders EngbergSt. Cloud jumped to a four run lead after three innings, but Duluth scored nine runs in the fourth thru seventh to win 9-7.  The Huskies committed six errors on the night, but received a great pitching effort from the bullpen as Anders Engberg (Minnesota Duluth) and Jason Whalen (Hillsborough CC) combined to allow five hits and two runs.  The 2010 All-Star Homerun Derby Champion, Mark Threlkeld (Louisiana Tech), blasted a three-run homer to lead the Huskie offense.
