Duluth Huskies

Duluth-The first three innings of play was all the Willmar Stingers needed Wednesday night, as the defeated the Duluth Huskies by a score of eight to three. Willmar scored two in the first, added four in the second, and finally two more in the third to take an eight-zero lead after three innings of play. Duluth busted in some runners in the bottom half of the sixth inning, but that would turn out to be all the Duluth runs for the night.
Josh Mooney (Dixie State) started the game for Duluth, going one inning and allowing two earned runs on 35 pitches. Jack English (Florida Gulf Coast) came in the second for his Huskies debut, letting in four runs in one inning, striking out two. A.J McElderry (Indian Hills CC) and Alex Estrella (New Mexico) came in relief for Engligh, throwing a combined seven innings. McElderry went four innings allowing to runs and struck out three Stingers, while Estrella went three innings and allowed no runs on no hits and two walks, striking out one.
Jon Flinn (Hawaii) earned the win for the Stingers, going 5 1/3 innings while allowing three earned runs. Scott Lieser (St. Cloud State) came in relief for Flinn, allowing no runs through 3 2/3 innings, striking out five.
Hunter Dozier (Stephen F. Austin) and Michael Suchy (Flordia Gulf Coast) were the big hitters for Willmar Wednesday, with Dozier going three-for-five with two runs scored, and Suchy going three for three-for-three with three RBI.
Luke Campbell (New Mexico) and Trey Vavra (Madison College) batted all of Duluth's runs, with Campbell going two-for-four with two RBI, and Vavra htting one-for-three and batting in a runner.
The Huskies now travel to Rochester for a three game series against the Honkers. Duluth will be back at home Sunday at Wade Stadium to take on Thunder Bay, with a 5:05 start. |

Huskies Win Pitchers' Duel |

The Duluth Huskies evened the series with the Willmar Stingers at one all Tuesday night, coming off the pitching of Evan Geist (Florida State) and the batting of James Ramsay (UNF). Duluth struck first on a James Ramsay single, scoring Austin Dubberly (Montevallo) from third. Ramsay wasn't done quite yet, as he hit in Dubberly again in the bottom of the fourth, lifting the Huskies to a two-nothing lead. The Stingers would make the game interesting, however, as Max Kuhn (Kentucky) hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Michael Suchy (Florida Gulf Coast) from third. The Huskies would hold on, using their bullpen to shut the door on the Stingers.
Geist received the win for the Huskies, going five innings allowing one run, and striking out three. Jake Nystrom (St. Scholastica) and Nate Carter (Florida Southern) combined for four innings of shutout pitching, with Carter garnering the save coming in the ninth.
Richie Navari (Scottsdate CC) took the loss for the Stingers, going five innings and giving up two earned runs.
Ramsay ended the day going three-for-four, batting in both of Duluth's runs. Austin Dubberly scored both Huskies runs, and Max Duval also chipped in offensively, going two-for-four. |

Waterloo- The Duluth Huskie's bats won't seem to calm down this season, as they swept the Waterloo Bucks by scores of 11-10 and 16-3.
The Huskies started Saturday's game with pitcher Jonathan Meyer (Clemson) on the mound, and opposing him was Zach Pettiford (Texas A&M) for Waterloo. Duluth jumped out to a big lead early, scoring eight runs in the top of the second inning capped off by a Max Duval (Hawaii) three-run homerun. The Bucks would come back with a rally of their own, matching Duluth's runs with eight of their own in the bottom half of the fourth inning. In the top half of the ninth inning, the Huskies found themselves down by a score of 10-9. Paul Karmeris (UNF) started the rally for the Huskies, with a one-out double to left field. After an Austin Dubberly (Montevallo) ground out, Duluth's hopes of evening the score were on center fielder Jake Ramsay's (USF) shoulders. Ramsay would come in the clutch, scoring Karmeris from third on a base hit. After a wild pitch advanced Ramsay to second base, Michael Suiter (Kansas) completed the rally on a single to left field, putting the Huskies on top by a score of 11-10. Duluth closer Nate Carter (Florida Southern) came in for his second inning of work, and shut the Bucks down, securing the victory for Duluth.
Carter received the win for the Huskies, going 1 1/3 innings and striking out four Bucks. Kyle Kramp (Butler) took the loss for Waterloo, giving up the two runs scored in the ninth inning.
Jake Ramsay and Paul Karmeris lead Duluth's offense, with both getting three hits apiece Saturday, with Ramsay batting in three runners. Max Duval also batted in three Huskies on his second inning blast. Luke Campbell (New Mexico), Michael Suiter (Kansas), Trey Vavra (Madison College), and Taylor Burch (Louisanna Tech) all had two hits for the Huskies at day's end.
Sunday's game in Waterloo proved to be all Huskies, winning by a score of 16-3. The entire Huskies starting line up had at least two hits, lead by Michael Suiter, who went three for four with an astounding two homeruns and six RBIs. Suiter's performance got him northwoodsleague.com's "player of the night." Duluth scored runs in every single inning besides the third. Big games especially came from Austin Dubberly (Montevallo), Jake Ramsay (USF), Trey Vavra (Madison College) and Luke Campbell (New Mexico). Dubberly went two for four with an astronomical four runs scored, Ramsay went three for six with two RBI, Vavra had two hits, scoring three runs and batting in one, and Campbell collected three hits of his own.
Michael Suiter is now in the top three in all triple crown categories, leading the league in batting with a .488 batting average, leading the league in RBI with 15, and is third in home runs, with three.
Joey Novak (Harvard) got the win in good fashion Sunday, going six strong innings and giving up one run, striking out four. Novak received northwoodsleague.com's "pitcher of the night." This marks the first day a pitcher and a batter from Duluth got both awards on the same night.

In their second extra-inning game of the season, the Duluth Huskies bats cooled off just enough for the Willmar Stingers pitching. Willmar took a four-three edge going into the ninth inning, but the Huskies were not done yet. In the bottom half of the ninth, the Huskies found themselves down by one run with two outs, and the hometown faithful's hopes dwindling. With two strikes on him, Duluth second baseman Austin Dubberly (Montevallo) spurred a rally with a single. James Ramsay (USF) kept the inning alive with a single of his own, and Michael Suiter (Kansas) came in the clutch, knocking in Dubberly for the game-tying run. Max Duval (Hawaii) then put a big charge on a 1-2 pitch to straight-away center field, but was caught at the fence by Stinger center fielder Stephen Talbott (Purdue).
In the top half of the 10th inning, Willmar strung together a run with Mitch Rowen (Willamette) hitting a double, and scoring two batters later on a hot shot to Austin Dubberly, who couldn't quite hall in the short hop.
The Huskies found themselves down a run yet again in the bottom half of the tenth. Trey Vavra (Madison College) kept the inning alive with a two-out single, but Coner Szczerba (Polk State) couldn't bat him in, on a looper to short left-center field.
Brady Anderson (Florida Gulf Coast) got the win for the Stingers, allowing the one run in the bottom of the ninth, striking out two. Anderson came after starter Andrew Pulido (U of San Francisco) went seven innings, allowing three earned runs, and striking out six Huskies.
Joey Webb (Menlo College) started the game for the Huskies, allowing three runs on three hits, striking out eight. Nate Carter took the loss for the Huskies, allowing one run (unearned) and striking out two.
Trey Vavra and James Ramsay lead the Duluth bats Monday, both going three-for-five, and Vavra getting an RBI. The Huskies out-hit the Stingers by a margin of 12-5.

After a heartbreaking loss Thursday night, the Duluth Huskies bounced back with a big win over the Rochester Honkers by a score of 9-1. A huge first inning by the Huskies, along with stellar pitching from Austin Perez (Steston) and Nathan Garza (Oral Roberts) helped coast the Huskies to win the rubber game with the Huskies.
Perez took the win for the Huskies, going 5 strong innings and giving up one run, striking out 3. Garza would come in relief in the 6, and never looked back scattering 3 hits and striking out 8 Honkers in 4 innings of work. Garza's ERA is now at .000 in 8 innings of work.
The big first inning by the Huskies started out with a walk to Austin Dubberly (Montevallo) and a single by James Ramsay (USF). With no one out and two runners on, Michael Suiter (Kansas) smashed a double out to left-center field, scoring Dubberly. Up next was Max Duval (Hawaii), who wasted no time, and lined a base hit on the second pitch, scoring Ramsay. The Huskies weren't finished yet, as a walk to Trey Vavra (Madison College) loaded the bases for Taylor Burch (Louisanna Tech), who was hit on the very first pitch, which would score Suiter from third. A single by Paul Karmeris (UNF), and a Derrik Nelson (Mount Marty) hit-by-pitch would go on to put the Huskies up 5-0. Austin Dubberly came up for the second time in the inning and hit in Burch. When the smoke cleared going into the second, Duluth found themselves in a six run lead.
The Huskies would go on to score 2 more runs in the bottom of the third, and another in the bottom of the fifth for good measure. These runs were more than enough for Perez and Garza, who gave up only 6 hits between the two hurlers.
Ramsay ended the night going 3-6 with an RBI, Suiter would drive in three runs on a 1-3 night, and Max Duval kept his league leading RBI tally up, hitting a runner in Friday night.
The Huskies have yet to lose a series this season as they head to Waterloo for a big series against the Northern Division's top team. The Huskies will return to Wade Stadium on Monday to take on the Willmar Stingers in a three game series. Monday marks Minnesota Twins Night at The Wade featuring TC Bear! Gates Open at 6:05 PM.
