The Duluth Huskies kicked off an 8 game homestand Thursday night with a 4-2 victory over the Willmar Stingers. This was the first game in 4 days for both teams because of the All-Star break in Eau Claire. The Huskies got a great pitching performance from starter Chris Jensen (San Diego) who has quality starts in 5 of his last 6 starts. Jensen went 6 innings allowing no runs on just 4 hits. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the 4th inning when the Huskies exploded for 4 runs. Mark Threlkeld (Louisiana Tech), coming off his HR derby victory, led off the inning with a single, and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Roliard (Louisiana Tech). Barrett Serrato (Purdue) and Zeke DeVoss (Miami) extended the Huskies lead to 4-0 with back to back RBI singles. That was all Huskies pitching would need, as Jensen, Austin Gaines (Florida Gulf Coast), and Jason Whalen (Hillsborough Community College) held the Stingers offense to just two runs. Whalen picked up his 7th save of the year with a perfect ninth.
The Stingers got their two runs in the 8th, when RF Jordan Smith hit a 2 RBI triple. Devoss and Threlkeld had two hits apiece for the Huskies, who face the Stingers again on Friday for the second game of a two game series. The game is scheduled for 7:05.
